One day the boy and I took a long walk about our neighborhood, to see all the Saturday gardens and their people, puttering in front of their houses. We stopped in front of a tiny blue house, with a holly pruned into the shape of a bell, and a giant schefflera taking up the whole front window. And I thought, a Gardener lives here. As I was snapping a photo, a man came out and said, “You like my house?” When I exclaimed Yes, he gave us a tour of his garden, named each of his trees and told me how long they’d been there (“the birds planted that one!”). He had the last of what long ago had been an apple orchard that took up at least the whole city block, and a menagerie of pesky bluebirds who ate peanuts under his carefully sculpted rose arbor.
A garden is a legacy, shaped by its person but with a will of its own. A long game, a life project. This is a large-scale, tropical leafy design musing on Richard and his Giant Schefflera in the window. He told me, “Gardening is Therapy. I do it so I don’t kill people.”
